I was scrolling through Tiktok earlier today and this video showed up. And yes, this video is from last year but I guess the algorithm picked up on my search for inspiration on what to write about. I’m not going to lie, this video sent a shudder down my spine. The person above shared that there had been a Samsung data breach - a chilling reminder of our fragile digital existence.

I immediately began to dig into the incident. It revealed that no matter the device we entrust our data to, be it an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy, our personal data is perpetually under threat. According to a report, the average price for a hacked Facebook account on the dark web is $74.50, and the cost of stolen credit card data can range from $10 to $120. In a more sinister turn, more extensive identity information, such as social security numbers and birth dates, can be sold for as high as $1,000.

The frequency at which this data is sold is equally troubling. In a single year, the number of data records compromised exceeded 37 billion in 2020, a 141% increase compared to the previous year.

And now you’re wondering, well, how does this invisible transaction take place? The answer lies in the applications we use every day. Many apps, under the guise of providing free or personalized services, surreptitiously collect our data and sell it to data brokers.

For example, a weather app might collect your location data not just to provide accurate forecasts, but also to sell this information to advertisers who can then target you based on your whereabouts.

But you were able to unsubscribe from them, individuals should possess the same right to determine how, when, and to whom their data is sold. After all, it is their digital imprint, a reflection of their behaviors, preferences, and identities.

In an ideal world, we would be able to commoditize our own data. We could set our price, choose our buyers, and determine the terms of use. This would not only offer us agency and control over our personal information but also make sure that any economic benefits derived from the sale of our data are returned to us, rather than being siphoned off by third parties.

A system of this nature would represent a shift in the data economy, repositioning individuals as active participants rather than passive subjects. This would mean significant changes to existing data practices and would require robust mechanisms to ensure transparency, accountability, and enforcement.
